Four years ago Borders Books in Hollywood held a Launch Party for Carrie Leigh's NUDE magazine. This event put us on the map. As we bid a fond farewell to the American bookstore institution, we want readers to know we have been in the process of reinventing NUDE.

Even American institutions must change with the times or die; unfortunately, Borders did not change. Sadly, Borders is liquidating all their stores. Barnes & Noble has already closed over 1,000 stores in the past few years but remains in business due to the NOOK. Financial statements from the first quarter of 2011 reflect 75 percent of revenue came from NOOK sales.

As we have spent the past four years creating a market for our publication, we now find the existing delivery system, i.e., the major bookstore chains, is quickly becoming extinct. As we mentioned a couple months ago, our present distribution contract will expire this month. Look for more on this in another post.

We have taken some time to consider all options and to weigh where the future of NUDE should take us. Stay tuned. A new generation of NUDE is in the works and will include a choice of options for our subscribers.

A Little American Freedom

Enough is enough.

From now on, when you click on a copyrighted picture on this blog, you will be taken on a visit to the NUDE website. No more free downloads. It came to our attention yesterday that copyrighted images from this blog has ended up on pay sites.

"I don't mind sharing my art," Carrie said. "I have not previously protected it from downloads as I don't mind someone showing it with proper credit. But when my art is stolen and sold on Internet pay sites without my consent, it hurts everything I have worked for. It hurts me and my models when this happens."

As the glut of pirated music and images drives legitimate sources out of business, it concerns us to learn where images go that are posted on not-for-profit blogs. Our stat counters show every download, and sometimes a visitor comes and downloads hundreds of images. For what purpose? Some create electronic portfolios for their own use, but now we have proof some of the downloads are pirated images to be used for commercial purposes without even a credit to the artist or artists.

The website of the Recording Industry of America says, "Copyright law protects the value of creative work. When you make unauthorized copies of someone’s creative work, you are taking something of value from the owner without his or her permission." Not only is this a clear breach of ethics; it violates U.S. law. Criminal penalties can run up to five years in prison and/or $250,000 in fines, even if you didn’t don't download music and images for monetary or financial or commercial gain.

According to the site:

Online music theft is "commonly known as piracy, but that’s too benign of a term to adequately describe the toll that music theft takes on the enormous cast of industry players working behind the scenes to bring music to your ears. That cast includes songwriters, recording artists, audio engineers, computer technicians, talent scouts and marketing specialists, producers, publishers and countless others.

"While downloading one song may not feel that serious of a crime, the accumulative impact of millions of songs downloaded illegally – and without any compensation to all the people who helped to create that song and bring it to fans – is devastating. One credible study by the Institute for Policy Innovation pegs the ANNUAL harm at $12.5 billion dollars in losses to the U.S. economy as well as more than 70,000 lost jobs and $2 billion in lost wages to American workers."

The site shares legal precedent regarding the piracy of copyrighted images online. In Playboy Enterprises v. Russ Hardenburgh, Inc., 982 F. Supp. 503 (N.D. Ohio 1997), it was decided that:

"Distributing unlawful copies of a copyrighted work violates the copyright owner’s distribution right and, as a result, constitutes copyright infringement. . . . . [Unlawful distribution occurs where] [f]iles of [copyrighted] information are stored in the central system, and subscribers may either ‘download’ information into their[computers] or ‘upload’ information from their home units into the central files . . . ."

So there is no need to question whether online theft of copyrighted images is indeed art theft. It is, and in the United States it is a felony to steal art. Within hours of notifying an Arizona-based pay site that they were in violation of U.S. copyright law, the site removed artwork pirated from Carrie Leigh that initially appeared in print in Carrie Leigh's NUDE magazine and was later published on the official blog.

I don't mind visitor downloads of work for personal use. But it is another story with the pay site pirates who take our work for commercial purposes and make money on it without even crediting the photographer. There are also those who pass off others' work as their own work. Piracy is art theft, and it is unethical and illegal and hurtful to all of us, each and every artist, when it occurs.

I realize some will shrug and say, "Then don't post your work online." That's like saying, "If you don't want to be hit by a drunk driver, stay at home and don't go out on the highway." This is, after all, the Information Superhighway.

Pippa NUDE? She's not the first...

The Duchess of Cambridge's family should not have upset the Queen with their embarrassing photographs of James and Pippa. These images of the Royal relatives just this week appeared on the Internet in the United States in various states of undress.

Carrie Leigh’s NUDE magazine exposed the Royal Family long before the Royals exposed themselves. The Queen was home and didn't say a word. The nude was photographed in front of Buckingham Palace with the police in the background watching.

Why is everyone up in arms now?

The Spring 2010 issue of Carrie Leigh's NUDE magazine features an exhibit of female nudes shot on Royal Ground by London photographer Jan Murphy as a statement of artistic freedom. Ms. Murphy shows her nude model wearing white gloves for presentation to the Queen, who was inside the Palace at the time as the flag is flying.

According to Carrie Leigh, "I wish I had the opportunity to do what Jan Murphy did. It makes quite a statement to shoot nudes with a world landmark like Buckingham Palace as a backdrop."

In conjunction with Carrie Leigh's NUDE, Murphy and her nude models elected to shoot at
some of London's historic sites, including Buckingham Palace as the Royal Flag flew, the Tate Museum of Art, and the GLA building.

Long before all this, Queen Victoria had a passion for nude art that is now the subject of Victoria & Albert: Art & Love, an exhibit at The Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace that opened March 19.

Everyone knows that everything changes in life.

Once I was a model who had the opportunity to work with some great photographers. Now I am a photographer who has the opportunity to work with great models. When I was a model I loved to be published in print; now I am a print publisher. Once I was single; now I am married with children.

My history reflects change, but one thing that has never changed is that I have one and only one mother.
The common denominator among everyone in the world is that we all have a mother. Times change, and people change, but today is the day to spend time with your mother or, if you can't be with her, reflect on what she means to you.

I have or should i say had a Facebook page that I used mostly for business reasons, and keeping in touch with fans and letting them know what I was working on. This past Tuesday, I posted to my page the new cover to the upcoming issue of NUDE because I have a new piece of art in it. I added a link to pre-order the issue and I made the cover my profile picture for the day.

I woke up Wednesday morning to find my profile picture was gone. I immediately went to my email and found a message from Facebook stating:

"You uploaded a photo that violates our Terms of Use, and this photo has been removed. Facebook does not allow photos that attack an individual or group, or that contain nudity, drug use, violence, or other violations of the Terms of Use. These policies are designed to ensure Facebook remains a safe, secure and trusted environment for all users, including the many children who use the site. If you have any questions or concerns, you can visit our FAQ page at http://www.facebook.com/help/?topic=wphotos."

So I followed the link to see if there was anymore information to help and got this:

What kinds of photos does Facebook remove?

Photos are removed if they contain nudity, drug use or other obscene content. If the photo attacks another individual or group, it will be removed as well.

The image was the cover of the new issue of NUDE. I'll give it that it is one of the sexier covers that Carrie has shot, but was there anything to censor? Even though I had viewed the image many times now, having worked with it to put it on the Carrieleigh.com website, I had to pull up the image again to really look at it. This cover is going to sit on shelves at Barnes and Noble and Borders. It will be up on Amazon.com. Maybe Carrie missed some "naughty bit" that could not only get the image pulled from Facebook, but hidden from display at the book stores.

I looked at it carefully. I blew it up huge on my monitor like a pervert hunting for some bit of naughty, but I found nothing. All I can figure was that maybe the person who viewed the image looked at it quickly as a small image and, at a glance, thought the model was naked. So, Wednesday night, I posted the image again as my profile pic, but this time I added in the description asking that before anyone thinks to remove the image to examine it because it did conform to Facebook's "terms of use".

Thursday morning I woke up and immediatly turned on my laptop to make sure that it was still there and, "whew", there is was. I got up and out of the house, arrived at work and turned my computer on, went to Facebook and... gone... no explanations, just the same form letter. What I didn't mention before is with the form letter and amongst the terms of use, it basically tells you that they will not tell you what images they remove or why.

This frustrated the hell out of me. I am not a sit down and just take it. I make calls, I write letters, I try to get and answer... but you can't with Facebook. No way to really contact anyone. No emails for sure. I was to then forced to just sit and take it while someone played judge and jury with the images on my page. Facebook's own Gestapo of censorship.

I wasn't done, I got a little hot-headed this time and I added, right on the image, below the image, and in big enough type to read at a small size, I wrote asking to please look at the image before taking it down again. Maybe not as friendly as that, but that is the gist of it. Then I went on about my day.

Well, it didn't take a day for me to find out if they would ignore my message and take it down again. Around 7pm, I went to my Facebook page and... it was gone... but this time it was not just the image that was gone, the Facebook censors deleted my whole account. I was in shock. I had been on Facebook for at least 2 years and the page had become a huge business tool for me. I had over 2000 friends and customers on the page that are now gone. I have dozens of sites that now link to a blank page on Facebook where people would be looking for me, and all because some "Censor Nazi" would either not look carefully at the image, or has standards that are even more puritanical that of the Facebook terms of use.

Let me just add in here that the page I had with Facebook was completely set to private so the only way you could see anything on my page would be to be on my "friends" list. I do this intentionally for these reasons because as an artist who does nudes and work that may be risque for some, I want to make sure that only the audience I chose can see and no children can have access.

This is not my first run-in with censorship on Facebook, I guess. I have had artwork of nudes removed. Tastefully done artistic nudes, but it didn't seem to matter. If I drew a nipple, it was gone. I guess if it is not Titian or Michelangelo, it is then naked and not art. This doesn't explain the magazine cover though, and there seems to be no-one to ask "why?".

Maybe I shouldn't have called them Censor Nazis... Maybe Facebook sucks.

Carrie Leigh’s NUDE is an international art quarterly founded in Los Angeles, Calif., in 2007 by Carrie Leigh Publishing Group. The publication has no advertising and is funded by subscriptions and bookstore sales. The magazine has grown into an internationally recognized brand with fine art photographer Carrie Leigh now one of the world’s top female publishers. Leigh was the First Lady of the Playboy mansion in the 1980s.

NUDE is printed on a sheet-fed, plate printing press on heavy matte satin paper.

In August 2008 NUDE was one of the fastest growing publications in a suffering magazine industry. In November 2008, NUDE launched its first annual contest. Winners are announced in the Summer issue.

In Memory: Herman Leonard

I would like the art community to stop for a minute today to reflect on the passing of one of our great photographers, Heman Leonard. He died Saturday, Aug. 14, at the age of 87. For those of you who do not know who he was and what he did, you can read his obituary here. He photographed iconic images of jazz greats such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Frank Sinatra. Google his name, look at his art, and you will see why he was one of our greats.

Six months ago we began an interview with him that was never completed. As an artist and a publisher, I felt that he should share his life with us at NUDE but that was not to be.

Today we remember him.

The next issue returns art to its origins. As the international media has already reported, we captured nudes in the midst of the ruins of Detroit, a once-great world city. Since the dawn of time, an image is worth a thousand words. NUDE reveals where billions of U.S. taxpayers' bailout dollars have gone.

In London, who better to show the Queen without her clothes than another woman? Almost a thousand years ago, Lady Godiva threw off her clothes and rode down England's cobblestone streets in protest of the crown. The cobblestone streets are still there and, in a NUDE exclusive, a female photographer takes her models in broad daylight down the same cobblestone streets to London's grand institutions. This issue will bare it all.

As always, the Spring 2010 issue will also be a timeless visual treat.

As a child, Alicia spent fifteen years of her life pursuing the art of ballet. Although committed and passionate towards dancing, she incurred many injuries. One of those injuries would end her career as a dancer. At seventeen, months before entering Julliard, she was told that she needed a hip replacement and that dancing would more than likely be over for her. “I was devastated, but my mom, who has been the queen of guardian angels to me, encouraged me to continue on and start a new career.” Just a week following her eigthteenth birthday, Alicia left Michigan, where she was born and raised, to pursue modeling in New York.

“After so many auditions, dead-ends, closed doors, and no thank you, I was at my breaking point.” After living in New York for three years, Alicia began to show signs of discouragement. Despite small breakthroughs such as being a cover model in two books and achieving an editorial in a national magazine, her progress became taxing and even overwhelming. While thoughts about quitting became more frequent, she would turn to her mother for encouragement.

Taking her opportunity as a sign, Alicia brings a different kind of beauty to Nude. While not just a pretty face, Alicia is a curvy model, who is able to use her dance background to produce graceful poses. Her goal is to inspire others to be comfortable with themselves and who they are. Her refusal to drop weight to maintain an image is grounded in her beliefs to portray realistic images to readers as well as other models and young girls. She wants to show that “You can become successful in a world where, if you have the drive and strength, you don’t have to blend into the mold.”

While emphasizing natural beauty, Alicia’s message is passed down to the many that wish to follow her career path or even in her footsteps. Her desire to remain true to herself vibrantly shows in the picture selection for this quarter’s copy of Nude.

“I am ecstatic to work with Nude. I’m grateful not only to be part of the beautiful art that Nude portrays, but also that I was given a chance to be part of something with such high integrity, while sticking to who I am.”

The sold-out Fall 2007 Premiere issue of Carrie Leigh's NUDE is now available for the first time and only through the website. This issue, signed and numbered by Carrie Leigh, will be limited to 200 copies.

Where did these copies come from?

Carrie Leigh says, "When I launched NUDE I held on to a few copies of the Premeire issue, not knowing what would happen with this magazine. As it turns out it has become a success and now, after ten issues, I have decided to let go of some of my copies of the original NUDE, the Issue that has launched a fine art movement worldwide."

This is the only release of Issue Number 1, signed and numbered. Carrie Leigh will only sign 200 copies, so take advantage now of the $50 collectors' price. Copies of this issue, unsigned, have sold for far more than that on Ebay.

It seems that everyone liked the Nick Ash flashback we did the other week. This time, an amazing photographer and the publisher of NUDE, Carrie Leigh, and her cover model shoot of one of my personal favorites of the NUDE cover models, Anastasia.

I had heard Carrie refer to Anastasia during the time they worked together as her muse, and got the impression that it may have been one of her best artist and model connections since she began NUDE. It really shows in this shoot.

The arts have always been where the core of my being thrives. As a child, I was exposed to a broad spectrum of creative expression. Through my mother, an artist, and my father, a musician, I had an ideal environment to let my natural attraction to the arts flourish. I savored everything freely defining each and every emotion or idea in my head with poetry, composing, or feeling a song through an instrument.

I was around twelve when I was first introduced to theatre. Acting became a new vessel to lose myself in. My love for acting was so strong that I decided after my first theatrical production that this was the career for me. It was in the pursuit of my dream that led me to simultaneously explore the world of modeling. This, in turn, is what brought me to the very pages of NUDE.

The first time I picked up NUDE Magazine, I was captivated. The empowerment and incredible beauty that resonated through each page held me for moments at a time. I made my best efforts to absorb each image, so I could forever have it with me. I’ve always been taken by the female form. I find it very powerful and oddly controversial. Whether its provoking shock and dismay by its mere natural sexuality, inebriating some with lust, or simply being embraced and admired for the exquisite creation it is, it never seems to fail in creating a strong reaction. This is why I find the word powerful so appropriate. NUDE, I felt, captured and represented the female form in a way that spoke to me most.

The women in NUDE own themselves. They stand empowered in their glory and are skillfully complimented with artistic ambiance. To be in the pages of this masterpiece of a magazine is a huge honor. When Carrie informed me that she wanted me to be the cover model for this issue, to say the least, I was very excited! Working with Carrie has been an amazing experience. We had an artist chemistry between us that strongly came into play through the photographs.

This was my first nude photo shoot. Carrie’s mesmerizing creativity inspired me as well as encouraged me to learn more about the creative process of photography. She welcomed any questions and comments I had and made me feel that I was truly part of a team. From the initial concept of shooting on the beach to wherever the creative process took us, I really loved the whole experience.

With the permission of Carrie Leigh and the amazing people over at NUDE Magazine, I am going to be, here and there, displaying some of my favorite features from past issues of NUDE Magazine.

I am going to start with probably one of my all time favorite features, from the Winter 2007 issue, Nick Ash.

This shoot is in a lot of ways very near and dear to my heart because I myself am a closet conservationist. It is sad for me to see the impact of our "civilization" on the world ecology. From the poisoning of our air and water to the extinction and near extinction of so many species of animals. From the refuse that floats in the middle of the ocean like some island made from our garbage, to the receding glaciers which do more than most really understand to protect our environment that we need to live.

Nick Ash went up to Alaska and shot with models on some glaciers and came back with not only beautiful photos of models, but exquisite photos of nature. --Joel

Ice Cold Nudes On Alaskan Glaciers

For some time I have had a vision of shooting art nudes on glaciers. It seemed though to be a daunting task given the extreme elements that support the existence of glaciers and the obvious challenges that would need to be overcome. And given that, how would I make the nude blend into this frigid environment in a natural and aesthetic way? It is very important to me that the final image is striking and pleasing to myself and others.

Alaska is the most beautiful, extremely wild, unpopulated and unspoiled place. It is home to some 100,000 glaciers and much wildlife. It pains me to think of these beautiful glacial formations disappearing out of existence through global warming.

To the inexperienced, careless and unsuspecting, Alaska can be very dangerous. The bookstores in Alaska are full of books chronicling all the deaths and maimings that have occurred over it's history to those that disrespect it's ever-changing temperament. Glaciers are no exception. They are constantly on the move, groaning under foot, dropping huge chunks of ice, and opening new crevasses.

Initially, this trip was to be an exploration trip for coming back in the summer with models. As it turned out though, I did find a suitable glacier and a couple of willing models, Tamara and Eileen that really wanted to participate in this project.

Both of them took to the ice with ease and they did not seem to look or feel out of place in this environment. They were cold for sure, however, the fact that it was a sunny day and there was little to no wind is what made it possible. Remarkably, the sensuous shapes and forms of the ice, blended and mimicked with the sensuous curves of the body in a striking and unusual way.

Our time was not without surprises, incidents, or the element of danger. One such incident occurred after placing Tamara on what I thought was a solid piece of ice with a river running around it. Well actually it turned out to be a small iceberg that was floating freely. Much to my surprise, it started moving away with her on it!

On another occasion, Tamara lost her grip in the ice and fell into a crevasse. I managed to catch her on the way down and only just held enough grip on the ice myself to get her out. It would have been a serious situation , since the crevasse was quite deep and narrow and would have adequately jammed a body between it's icy walls. Now that would have been quite a find for some future archeologist!

Another look at Franchesco!

One of the most amazing things I have been able to do with my association with Carrie Leigh, and NUDE magazine, is introduce to them the idea that within an industry such as "comic books", are pearls of talent that can be appreciated beyond their field. So I began introducing Carrie to different illustrators and comic book artists. For the Spring 2009 issue, Carrie chose one. (Just happened to be one of my favorites).

Franchesco!

Franchesco! himself has told me of the great response he has gotten from his appearance in the magazine. I think it is an amazing step in exposing some of the great talents that exist in what many consider to be a "low brow" art form, having had him in the magazine. Europeans, especially the french, say that Comic books and Jazz are the only truely American art forms.

Franchesco! has recently posted on his Deviantart page "Precious Pearls". I thought it would be nice to show here since he is now a published NUDE Magazine artist.

I can't tell you how many time I have friends calling me asking to see if I can get them a copy of the magazine because they got to the stands too late and they were sold out. I don't have them other than what I may buy myself when the come out, so I tell them they better pre-order, or better yet, subscribe and really save some money.

The cover.. Wow! Carrie Leigh has done it again. I am so in love with this cover. The models name is Merrique, and she is beautiful. I can't wait to see the rest. I think from the cover alone, this issue is going to jump off the shelves, then that isn't saying much since every issue of NUDE from the beginning has sold out in the stores, and pretty much online.

Fall 2009 NUDE and an Adams Family team-up!

Hopefully on stands around November 15, will be the New Fall 2009 issue of NUDE. This issue will not have an individual cover model feature, but a retrospective of all the past cover models, shot by publisher/photographer, Carrie Leigh.

One of the winners of Carrie Leigh's NUDE Magazine's 2nd annual photo contest, John Tisbury, is also featured in this issue. (Photographers, don't forget to enter the 3rd Annual Carrie Leigh's NUDE Magazine photography contest)

A feature I am waiting to see is Veronika Kotlajic. The article is called "The Accidental Muse", and she has and amazing book called "The Muse". All appropriate titles to describe Veronika. I cannot think of another living model who has inspired more artists and photographers today. The only thing I think this feature will not include, is the inspired works of illustrators of Veronika, so I am going to recommend check out her book as well, "The MUSE"

Adams Family Team up!

A week ago, my father, Neal Adams, came out to Los Angeles on a business trip and to visit. While visiting, my father went though some of the many unfinished drawings I had strewn all over the place. He pick one out and asked if he could ink it. To those who do not know who Neal is, he is consideder a legend in the comic book industry. One of the best. The whole father thing aside, as a bit of a comic book nerd myself, how cool is it to have Neal Adams in a piece of mine? So ofcourse I said yes. Well, one thing led to another and he inked four really nice pieces. My original intent was to sell these pieces, but I am still spending lots of time staring at them. Maybe when it has worn off I will make them available.

CL NUDE's Summer 2009 edition

Wow.. I am so far behind.

Did you see it? Did you miss it? NUDE's Summer 2009 edition.. It was Hot!.. I say because.. They are wasgone, at least as far as I can get a hold of.. I live in the Los Angeles area, and I cannot find any copies anywhere I look. And I know that the copies made available by direct sale or for new subscriptions are sold out too. I hope you got your subscription in, don't miss the next one.

It was an amazing issue with lots of great photographers, amazing art and a cover model to knock your socks off, Ria Alexander, in another amazing shoot by publisher Carrie Leigh.

Also in this issue is art model Carlotta Champagne, in NUDE's first feature celebrating the models of nude art. Carlotta has been muse to many of the worlds best art nude photographers, and NUDE displays some of this work. The artist's/photographer's muse is hoped to become a regular feature in upcoming issues of NUDE.

This issue fianlly revealed the winners of the 2nd annual photo contest. Winners included Ming-Shiun Wu, and John Tisbury. NUDE has now announced the Third Annual Photo Contest for 2010. Get your entries in now.

Carrie Leigh's NUDE at Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC)

I was at the Long Beach Comic Con, Oct 2-4, and amongst my other work, I brought along My work from, and copies of NUDE Magazine. I wasn't sure what to expect from a comic book crowd having them there, but they got a lot of positive attention and even interest from artists and photographers at the show about how to submit. I think I will continue to bring them with me to shows. I am sure my stash of magazines wont last, but I still have the art I do for it and like it. I can't wait til the next LBCC

Model and current Miss MyspaceUSA, Ashlee Ricci has not only just recently listed, having modeled for me for a piece of art that appeared in NUDE, as one of her top ten modeling experiences, but listed me as #1 on the list. 100% Wacom Goofing Off

Been spendin a bit of time trying to improve my skills on the Wacom. The above started out to be a sketch only, to work out an idea.. next thing I new, I was coloring. The Model, is the late Angela Devi who mysteriously dies over a year ago. She was a huge inspiration for me, and I have drawn her quite a bit in the past. I will continue to use her for inspiration, I think.

New Art - Candy Stripper

Some more new art. I have been very busy doing 'day job' work, which though it is creative, it is not my work. 'Candy Striper' named because of the spiral stripes on the stockings, I did in one evening at home. I know that I will receive some comments about the body proportions, but the model was only 5 feet tall.

The other images 'Twins' is the same model, but due to a screw up on the hair and my hatred of erasers, she ended up a brunette. I usually do not sell this work, but I am consirdering selling 'Candy Striper'. I will post on my sketchbook site if I do.

More work coming soon.. I am trying to put more time in on my work and the Lilz, my other venture.

Shipping April 15 is the Spring 2009 issue of Carrie Leigh's NUDE Magazine. I am fortunate enough to have seen the files of the issue before it went off to press and all I can say is, there doesn't appear to be any slowing down of the quality or content over there.

The issue once again is jam-packed with amazing art and photography. Contributors include: Carrie Leigh, Darren Phillips, Gabriele Rigon, Dan West, Michael Sui, David Lebeck, Tome Lane, Chip Willis, Antoine De Villiers, Deborah Anderson, Franchesco!, Gary Mitchell, Lloyd Rosen, Guenter Knop... and me :)

There is also a feature by journalist Sharon Waxman on "The New Media". It is a good read.

I am happy, and proud, to see in this issue, the work of Franchesco!. Franchesco! is an artist who's work I have been familiar with for a few years now. His work is a little different from the kind of work that has been exhibited in NUDE in the past. Franchesco! like me, has a background in comic books and illustration, and has a style all his own. He has created some truly beautiful works, outside of his comic book work, that maintains his comic book/ illustration roots, and can at the same time be considered fine art nudes. Best of all in this issue is.. The return of NUDE magazines first cover model Sydney Brown .. I have said before that there is a disadvantage of appearing in the first issue of any publication. It is that as a new title, people are not looking for it. Most pick it up because they stumble across it on a magazine rack. The print run is much smaller because it is unpredictable how well it will sell, so there too, only so many will actually see it, but soon if you are lucky, the magazine, the readership, and the distribution and print runs will grow as happened with NUDE.

NUDE became a hit... A huge hit. But are the people who buy NUDE today familiar with Sydney Brown, NUDE's first cover model?

Well.. They are going to know now. Sydney is back and hotter than ever. Carrie Leigh has shot another amazing pictorial with Sydney including a new cover that has broken the short tradition of NUDE covers. I can't imagine that this issue wont fly off shelves for the cover alone. It is Hot.. Sydney is beautiful... It is gonna sell.. trust me.. fast.

The Spring 2009 issue is shipping April 15. I try to let people know when the issues will be on the news stands, but there are all kinds of problems that seem to happen between when the books leave the distributors and when they his the stand, so I can only guesstimate. And when they do come out they sell so fast. I suggest for those who really don't want to miss this issue that they go to the website where they are now offering, at least in the United States, that for the cover price, you can have this issue delivered to your door. Wacom Sketching

Save a tree, buy a Wacom.

A couple of years back. One of the guys in my studio came to me and said that Wacom had a new product out, a new monitor tablet, and that Wacom could send a representative over to demonstrate it.

I said, "not interested", it is gonna cost a fortune and the novelty will eventually fade, and we will be back to mouses and separate tablets in no time.

They went and had the representative come by anyway...

From the room were they were doing the demonstration, I heard the ooohs and aaahs, and eventually I went over to look at this very expensive toy....

$2600's later not only did I end up with the Wacom Cintiqu monitor, but I was the only one in the studio who did get one.. Figures right?

But I will say this, today, I don't know that I could work without one.. God forbid this thing breaks and I can't afford another one for a while. It has become as much a part of what I do as a pencil and paper and in some cases, is replacing the pencil and paper. The attached image is just a quick sketch 30 minutes. Something I like to do to keep my hand loose of work out ideas of just play. It is all digital in Photoshop. I even have a brush that mimics pencil.

The work I do for NUDE magazine is still done the traditional way, mostly because I like to have an original to sell, but also because I still need practice in doing finished art on the tablet... But man.. I love the sketching, and one day, I am sure I wont need paper anymore...

So… I am excited. Sometime in the beginning of January, my friends at NUDE are releasing their 6th art packed issue of Carrie Leigh’s NUDE Magazine.

So much so I have pestered Carrie for prints of some of the images… And I will continue to pester her till I get them.. ☺

On or near Sept 18, the new issue of NUDE Magazine, the Fall 2008/ 1st anniversary issue, will finally be out.

For the first time since the magazine had come out, this issue will also be available on the CarrieLeigh.com website. The copies there are available for order now. This is gonna be great news for those who have had trouble finding issues of NUDE when they come out because they sell out so damn fast. I live in Los Angeles. If I do not go out and get mine in the first few days of the release.. they will be gone and I have to scrounge around.

Entertaining and interesting in the new issue is the comedic and politically driven interview with Robert Wuhl. Robert Wuhl has really funny specials on HBO called "Assume the Position with Mr Wuhl" in which he teaches a college course on interesting and funny fact and myths in American history. It is with this in mind that NUDE talks to "Mr Wuhl" about the present day elections, candidates and politics. Alicia Marie Clark... What a way to start off a new year for NUDE. What a cover. Classy and beautiful, you cant help but stare at the cover and fall into the models eyes. Alicia is such a pretty girl and amazing model. I had opportunity to meet Alicia while the cover was being put together and thought she was as pretty in person as in the photos. She is a sweet heart too. I think the world is going to be seeing a lot more of her in the future. The cover is hot, her opening photo of her shoot is absolutely stunning.

Wow... I have mentioned in a previous blog about the the success of Carrie Leigh's Magazine compare to the failures of so many, one time popular, magazines today. This is really amazing because NUDE is not a sports or entertainment magazine, nor is it an erotic men's magazine even though it contains nude images and it's name is "NUDE".

Ok.. Another NUDE Blog... But at least I am involved in this one.. :)

I just spent this weekend with Carrie Leigh and her husband Gary reworking their website. Carrie's website has been getting an amazing amount of traffic since the magazine started dominating the bookstores and newsstands. So they thought it was time to update the website. So I got the call to see if I could do it. I am no expert, but I know a little html and stuff. So.. In a weekend... with Carrie breathing down my neck.. We banged out a new website.

...really just to get another look at the new cover for the Summer 2008 NUDE, but I entered to see Carrie standing there smiling, holding out a bunch of print outs and asking what I thought. I asked what I was looking at and she said "Winners". I then knew what I had been looking at. The winners of NUDE's First Annual Photography Contest... Cool huh?

For those who may be unaware, Carrie Leigh's NUDE Magazine hosts what is probably the most prestigious, fine art nude photography contest... Internationally. This is the only event where nude photography is featured as it's own category and the winners are published in print worldwide. Before I go on, I just want to say that what follows, takes nothing away from NUDE's Premiere cover model, Sydney <3. Sydney <3 is my personal goddess. To me she is a young Cindy Crawford and Famke Jensen all wrapped up in one. She is a true beauty.

Summer 2008 Cover model? HHHOOOTTTTT!!!! Wow! I was stunned when Carrie handed me the cover last week. This issue wraps up the first year of NUDE Magazine. And what a way to do it... Yeah, I know, the magazine is not about the cover models... This issue is packed with really amazing photography, by really amazing photographers... but between you and me... The cover gets people (who may not already be fans of the magazine) to pick the magazine up... I will always say that Sydney <3 sold the first issue.. This next issue Chanon Finley will be selling it.. I don't care if inside the magazine they have Jessica's Alba, Simpson, and Biel NUDE... Chanon is selling this issue. She is stunning. Really Stunning. And her shoot with Carrie Leigh is really amazing.

Don't miss this issue because, aside from everything else I have mentioned,... I have a new piece in the magazine.

NUDE Subscriptions

Oh yeah... Since this is my blog and I should talk a little about myself . :) Glamour-Con 42 was this past weekend. I can honestly say, I was surprised. Rewind a bit. Glamour-Con is a convention of sorts that brings Playmates old and new as well as erotic models and artist to the fans. I believe the show is sponsored, in some way, by Playboy magazine. I hadn't been to a Glamour-con in a few years. It really wasn't much of a show at the time. This time, new hotel, bigger ballroom, and lots of models. The biggest surprise though was the Saturday turnout. Lots of people.

I did pretty good.. Sold a bunch of sketch books old and new, and I sold a few prints. Bet If I had Sydney <3 there, I would have sold out ;)

It was a good show. I may do the next one in November. Look for me... New work posting soon!!!

New Sketchbook for GlamourCon

New for the Glamour Con Los Angeles. I have taken a lot of the new work I have done for NUDE Magazine, and other works like it , and put it together in a little 24 page "Ash-can" style sketchbook. So far I have only had 60 copies printed for the Glamour Con.. If it does well I will print more for the website and Comic Con. I am hoping though to get a lot more of this work together to produce a real art book of it. I will post if I have soon if I have any to sell on website. But I warn.. I am really slow at shipping stuff out.

PS.. Oh yeah.. I saw the cover to the summer issue of NUDE.. SWEEEEEET!.. The new cover model is hot! It is yet another great issue by Carrie Leigh... No slowing them down huh.. When other magazines are going under and falling apart. NUDE seems to be getting better. I can't wait for it to come out.

Motivated by someone who is a big fan of my work, I broke out my "magic reds" and started sketching this morning. The model is a long time friend (Ann).

Maybe I will take this one to a tighter piece. Got lots to do before that.

Nikki and Linda's Hair

Two of my favorite models.. Well only one actually modeled for me. Nikki, I draw a lot. She is my best friend, shark enthusiast, beautiful, and has great hair. I love this image. It was from a picture where she wasn't really ready for the pic. (Pre-mature shutter release). Not ready, but a captured moment I think was great.

Linda O'Neil never modeled for me. This was from a found photo. She has always been one of my favorite models and like Nikki... has great hair. :)

NUDE Magazine update... Winter storms have delayed the magazine release. Trucks carrying issue 2, the winter issue, have been slowed if not stopped by bad weather across the country. Hopes are west coast should release this weekend at newsstands. Middle states should get it at the beginning of next week, and the east coast should be getting it next weekend... Should being the operative word.

Hey... Maybe I can get NUDE's "Sydney Brown <3" to model for me? Hmmmmm.... She's Hot :)

Nikki hair study

Latex legs

Another new red pencil drawing. It was originally gonna be another fishnet piece, but lack of patience won out. Little did I realize that latex would be just as much work. The model is my best friend Nikki again. Her top was an after thought, the original was topless.. the physical piece is topless, but for posting, I created a separate top an added it in Photoshop. If I ever get my book together, it will include the topless original. Enjoy.

NIMOY makes for a HOT winter at NUDE Magazine

How hot is this.

Leonard Nimoy, most of us know him as the the emotionless yet lovable Vulcan first officer, Mr. Spock, of the original Starship Enterprise, in the the original series Star Trek. Some may know Leonard Nimoy as a director, directing Star Trek for television and movies, as well as directing "3 men and a baby". Some may also know Leonard Nimoy as a author and poet. But... Did you know he was a photographer? The people at NUDE Magazine surprised me with the announcement that they will not only have the work of Leonard Nimoy, but Carrie Leigh will be interviewing the director, author, poet,,, and photographer. Let me just let out an un-Vulcan "Wow!"

NUDE will also be stuffed with more great nude photography. Returning photographers Nick Ash and NUDE creator Carrie Leigh will have more work in it.

Of personal interest will be the work of and interview of artist and Internet copyright and image protection pioneer Anthony Guerra. This "Copyright Cowboy" is succeeding, where the music and entertainment industries are failing.

First let me start out but saying how honored I am to be a part of NUDE Magazine. What an amazing Magazine, if you want to call it that. It is like I have said all along, it is more like a quarterly coffee table book. It doesn't even feel like a magazine. From the printing to the paper and cover stock it is amazing, and packed full of really amazing, talented photographers... And... Sydney <3 Brown, cover model...

Now... Since the first issue is primarily sold out with the exception of a few copies that go to the first few subscription purchasers... I can share my interview.

The Art of Joel Adams

If one could choose their talent and be born into a family of that specific talent, then what we would have is an artist from birth. At NUDE we do have it in Joel Adams. Joel is an ongoing contributor to NUDE and we really wanted our readers to get a sneak peak into his life and we know, because we know Joel that before he could walk the legendary illustrator Neal Adams (Joel’s father) had a pencil in the babies hand. While others were out playing during their high school summer vacation Joel was working on advertising campaigns for major advertising agencies. What we wanted to know is why the offspring of one of America’s most talented families heart and soul is involved in illustrating the female form for NUDE.

CARRIE: Joel, we have known each other for years, it feels like I am interviewing my brother.

JOEL: (laughs)

CARRIE: What was your first professional job?

JOEL: At the age of sixteen while working summers in my fathers art studio, I drew a storyboard for a Toll House Cookies commercial. I was allowed to pretty much do the job myself. My first solo gig.

CARRIE: Very nice then what?

JOEL: After graduating from SVA in New York. I went to work back at my fathers company doing storyboards, comic book work and whatever else came through. After about a two years, I moved to Los Angeles to help run my fathers west coast studio. I did that for a few years.

CARRIE: Then what did you do?

JOEL: I had gone freelance for a bit, then had begun work in Animation as a Character designer

CARRIE: Television animation?

JOEL: Yes. My first job was for the "Incredible Hulk" animated series. Then moved on to shows like King of the Hill, Nascar Racers, Cyber9, etc... I did a lot of double duty working for both animation and licensing on most of the projects.

CARRIE: Do you find growth in your work?

JOEL: Yes, I am constantly experimenting with art, styles, mediums and working with new elements.

CARRIE: With all the mainstream art in your background what draws you to illustrating the nude female form?

JOEL: Love of the female form. I have always done it, always been obsessed with it. When most of my friends were drawing male superheroes, I was drawing women. I cant really think of anything more beautiful to draw. Not for me at least. I love to draw what I love to look at

CARRIE: What type of woman do you like to draw?

JOEL: I like strong women. Women who have a little bit of a darker side, maybe a little fetish to them. maybe a little Goth too.. Then tomorrow?.. Maybe an angelic blond. ;)

CARRIE: I notice that your feet and hands in your illustrations are amazing.

JOEL: Feet and hands are very important to me. My dad changed many things about the comic book world one of those were his drawings of dynamic hands, so I grew up with that as part of my focus.

CARRIE: It is in modeling too. Do you photograph your subjects and then draw?

JOEL: Yes, especially for the more realistic work.

CARRIE: So they need to know how to move their hands and place their feet?

JOEL: It is extremely important, sometimes, I have to demonstrate to the models how to do the movements I need. I am sure it can look funny sometimes.

CARRIE: What inspires you?

JOEL: Something that catches my eye, a look or a movement of a woman. Shapes, fashions, patterns. Most recently, my friends. One of my closest friends, at a time when I was really feeling dead creatively, posed for me. She was, at that time, very uncomfortable with her body and some weight she had gained, but she disrobed for me down to a pair of panties and posed. She was so uncomfortable but did it for me anyway, she was beautiful, and what I got from it was a piece that will always be one of my favorites. She is now, much more comfortable in her own skin and continues to inspire me. She is the muse for much of my recent work.

CARRIE: I welcome your ongoing contributions to NUDE and hope the readers enjoy your work as much as I do.

Borders Books Hollywood launches "Carrie Leigh's 'NUDE' Magazine"

Borders Books Hollywood launches "Carrie Leigh's "NUDE" Magazine".

In attendance will be:

Photographer / Publisher, Carrie Leigh.

NUDE Magazine's first cover model, the stunning Sydney Brown <3, and other feature "NUDE" Models.

The first issue of "NUDE" features 8 Great Photographers, In attendance will be Photgraphers: Perry Gallagher and Nick Ash.

And on-going contributing artist, Joel Adams.

The event takes place October 5th, at Borders Books - Hollywood, at 7 pm.
